Students observe dancers up-close in class or rehearsal, witnessing the skill, focus, and emotion behind every movement.
Go Behind the Curtain with OBT
A visit to Oregon Ballet Theatre is more than a field trip—it’s an experience that builds confidence, opening up the world of dance to young people in Portland. Field trips to OBT immerse students in the creative process, so they can discover new ways to move, think, and express themselves.

Bringing Your Students to OBT
Our South Waterfront studios welcome students on Tuesday and Thursday mornings throughout the year as part of our Portland field trips program. Most field trips run from 10 am to 11 am, including a rehearsal viewing, a tour, and joining in simple movement when possible.
Designed for up to 2 classrooms (or up to 25 people) per visit, each experience ranges from $150 to $250. If cost is a barrier, please reach out—we’re committed to making dance education possible for everyone.
Frequently Asked Questions About Field Trips
We recommend bringing one classroom of up to 25 students at a time. However, we can accommodate up to two classrooms per visit with advanced coordination. If you’d like to bring a group of more than 25 students on a visit, please indicate the class size when you register for a field trip. We also ask that you include details of any accessibility needs at the time of registration so we can ensure an inclusive, enriching experience for everyone.
During the school year, we schedule most field trips on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings from 10 am to 11 am. In the summer, field trips may begin as early as 9:30 am.
All visits take place at Oregon Ballet Theatre’s South Waterfront studios, located at 720 S Bancroft Street in Portland. OBT also offers in-school performances and lessons throughout the year to serve more students in our community.
Most students visit for one hour, but the start and end times may vary based on our studios’ availability and your group’s specific needs. Standard field trips include observing a class or rehearsal, touring areas like the costume shop, and participating in basic dance movements when the space allows. Please arrive early enough to allow time for our staff to check your group in and prepare our space and dancers for guests.
Yes. We kindly ask that teachers and adult chaperones accompany each group of students. Chaperones play an important role in helping students stay engaged and respectful during studio observations, shop tours, and interactive activities. We recommend maintaining your school or district’s required chaperone-to-student ratio to make the most of your visit and ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone.
Please contact OBT directly to register a class for a field trip to our studio. In your message, please include your school’s name, your group’s size, and your preferred dates. If you have any questions or would like to discuss accessibility accommodations, please disclose specific details in your message.
Our team will work with you to create a meaningful visit that aligns with both our dancers’ and your students’ schedules. We offer Portland field trips on a first-come, first-served basis, so we recommend getting in touch early in the season to secure your visit.
For a single class of 25 students or fewer, we require a $150 fee to visit our studio. If you’d like to bring a group of two classes together, we require a $250 fee. This flat rate covers the full experience, including time for class or rehearsal observation, backstage tours, and movement activities.
If the price to visit Oregon Ballet Theatre is not within your school’s budget, please reach out. We do our best to work with educators to make arts education possible for every student.
