Swan LakeA heart-wrenching fable of true love heroically won and tragically squandered, Christopher Stowell’s Swan Lake is classical theatricality at its thrilling best. Virtuoso solos, an achingly beautiful Tchaikovsky score, and majestic lines of dancers in brilliant white are all emblematic of one of the greatest story ballets of all time.

1/31/13: Swan Lake’s flock has to fly in perfect unison. Who makes it happen?

Audiences and critics often praise OBT’s unison dancing in big ensemble moments. The high quality of OBT’s corps de ballet work is one of Lisa Kipp’s accomplishments as ballet master for the company since the 2004-05 season. Because so many of Swan Lake’s most beloved scenes depend upon a stellar group of swans, it’s a good time to learn more about Lisa and her work as a ballet master HERE

1/24/13: Odette or Odile: Which Swan Would You Be?

Dancing Odette/Odile in Swan Lake is a rite of passage for many ballerinas. The two roles are most often portrayed by the same dancer, but occasionally they are danced by two different ballerinas. If you could only dance one role... which swan would you be? Tell us HERE

Which Swan Would You Be?

1/23/13: The Magic of Swan Lake

Principal Dancer Xuan Cheng is learning the roles of Odette (the White Swan Queen) and Odile (the Black Swan).  In her excitement about the opportunity to prepare these roles, she came across this fascinating 30-minute BBC documentary called “The Magic of Swan Lake.” This feature explores the ballet’s history and mystique. It’s narrated by Darcey Bussell, among the most acclaimed Swan Queens of her generation. Find out why many ballerinas consider dancing Swan Lake to be a rite of passage HERE
