Fertile Ground 2011 is a ten-day arts festival celebrating new work by Portland artists.  This year’s festival will feature over 50 Portland-generated new works, along with a myriad of other arts events from Portland’s creative community.  From fully-staged world premieres in theatre, to ensemble and collaborative driven work, dance, comedy, visual art and film, this festival spans the spectrum of creative endeavor and seeds the next generation of creation through artist conversations, workshops, lunchtime readings and more.

Oregon Ballet Theatre staff and dancers will be participating in world premiere works all over town on seven of the ten days of the festival.  See below for a guide on where to find us at the festival! Click the title links for more information or to buy tickets.

January 28th: That Was the River, This Is the Sea and . . . ballet? Joint Event With Afterparty / 7 pm

This world premiere staged reading is a bilingual, multimedia collaboration by Claire Willett (OBT Grants Manager) and Gilberto Martin del Campo (King Florestan, OBT’s The Sleeping Beauty).  When Leo takes his American girlfriend Rose to Mexico for his sister's wedding, she is ecstatic to meet his family for the first time. But she finds herself in the middle of a family conflict when Leo's cousin Javier skips the wedding. Leo and Javier have not spoken in years, though nobody can tell her why. Determined to mend the rift and get answers, Rose digs relentlessly into Leo's family history. But what she finds may change their relationship — and their lives — forever. As Leo's past and his future are drawn inexorably towards each other, a Greek chorus of Mexican aunts and uncles guide the audience on a journey through two countries and into the furthest reaches of the human heart. January 27th: . . . ballet? (8:30 p.m.)
January 28th: That Was the River, This Is the Sea and . . . ballet? Joint Event With Afterparty (7 p.m.)

Soloist Candace Bouchard and Company Artist Christian Squires share three evenings at The Art Department. Christian explores vulnerability as the place where the creation of art exists. Using speech and movement to pull audiences into that delicate space with him, his new work draws inspiration from the phrases you'd like to share with a loved one that you just don't let yourself say. Candace, creator of OBT Uprising, is currently fixated on a dancer's physical relationship with their surroundings, tools and even music. Working with composer Sean Flinn, she'll focus on the use of art to grasp at wisps of memory before they fade, immortalizing the most perfect morsels of life. TICKETS & INFO

Conduit (918 SW Yamhill, 4th Floor)

Former Principal Dancer and current SOBT staff member Gavin Larsen steps into Phase II of Incorporamento, a collaboration with poet David Biespiel and musician Joshua Pearl which debuted at last year's Fertile Ground Festival.   Challenging and allowing audiences to interpret performance in a new way, A Ghost In the Room With Us explores recollection, introspection, and meditative reverie, using art as a way to communicate with another part of oneself.  TICKETS & INFO
