OREGON BALLET THEATRE

Dear Friends and Supporters of OBT:

On behalf of the Oregon Ballet Theatre's Board of Trustees, it gives me great pleasure to announce the latest step in OBT's plan to continue the production of quality dance programing in Oregon--the selection of our permanent Artistic Director, Kevin Irving.  Kevin brings an international reputation for excellence and artistic quality to his position and is, we think, a worthy successor to James Canfield, Christopher Stowell, and Anne Mueller, who each, in their turn, contributed their time and talent to the Company as a nationally recognized leader in regional ballet.  Please join with me in welcoming Kevin to Portland, and share in our anticipation of his contribution for years to come.

I want to share with you that the Search Committee has done an exemplary job in running the searches for the Executive Director and Artistic Director concurrently over the past few months. While our intention was to hire the Executive Director first and then Artistic Director we came to realize that we did not want to rush either decision. While we feel we are close to finding the right fit for OBT in the Executive Director role we knew we had two tremendously strong candidates for Artistic Director.

Please also accept the thanks and appreciation of all members of the OBT family for your help and support over the past several months of transition:  you helped us to sell out our Swan Lake performances--to the extent that the Keller's second balcony had to be opened up to help accommodate the demand for seats; you came to Nutcracker in record numbers; and you have already surpassed prior sponsorships for our wonderful dancers.  These are just a few of the ways in which the Portland community has stepped up to work with OBT to assure its continued existence and the presentation of dance at the highest level.  Kevin's addition to our team is just the next step in this effort and we look forward to working with all of you as we continue along OBT's path to long-term stability and excellence.

Thanks for your support,
Ken Hick

A Message from Kevin:

I am thrilled to be here in Portland and to become a part of this amazing community and organization, and feel honored to be following in the footsteps of such inspirational artistic leaders. I am truly excited to lead the school and company of OBT into what I expect will be a wonderfully creative and successful next phase, and thank all of OBT's faithful patrons for their continued support. Nicolo and I already love the city of Portland and we cannot wait to settle in!

The possibilities for classical ballet in the 21st Century are almost without limit - the dancers of OBT are able to embrace both the traditions of our past and the potential of our future, and that is why I am so happy to be joining the company at this point in time. So whether we are telling stories, or waxing poetic, or simply celebrating beauty in motion, be assured that OBT will continue to make you proud!

I am looking forward to being a part of the opening night of Celebrating Balanchine program this Friday night - and hope to see as many of you there as possible! It will be an extraordinary evening of dancing - and a good chance to say hello.
