When composer Aaron Copland finished his commissioned dance score for Martha Graham he gave it the working title “Ballet for Martha”. Graham renamed the ballet and score “Appalachian Spring” and it went on to become one of their most famous collaborations. Even though it celebrates American pioneers in the 1800’s, much of the production still looks modern today (especially the set design by sculptor Isamu Noguchi). Did we mention that it premiered almost 70 years ago in 1944? Incredible.
