The season opens with a program created in concert with the Portland Art Museum’s Fall 2012 Body Beautiful Exhibit, which explores the human form through exquisite objects from the British Museum’s famed collection of Greek and Roman sculptures. Balanchine’s 1928 neoclassical ode to godlike forms, Apollo, begins the program, followed by Kent Stowell’s re-imagining of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth as an intimate pas de deux in Orpheus Portrait. The evening continues with the second work of choreographic titan William Forsythe to enter OBT’s rep, Second Detail, which explores the dancer as superhuman. The evening culminates with a thrilling world premiere collaboration between Artistic Director Christopher Stowell and a NW visual artist selected with Portland Art Museum curator Bruce Guenther.

About the Exhibit: Premiering at the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Body Beautiful Exhibit makes its US Premiere in Portland, September through November at the Portland Art Museum. Subscribe by March 16th and receive a complimentary admission* to the exhibit.

Prodigal Son
Company Premiere
Sergei Prokofiev / George Balanchine

La Valse
Company Premiere
Maurice Ravel / George Balanchine

On the 30th anniversary of George Balanchine’s death, we celebrate the diversity of his contribution to dance with three very different examples of his choreography. La Valse shows Balanchine’s darkly romantic side, as a young girl unwittingly waltzes her way into the arms of death. Prodigal Son, a 1929 collaboration with modernist painter Georges Roualt and composer Sergei Prokofiev, is both one of Balanchine’s earliest and most adventurous works, pulling pathos and passion out of the bible parable. Completing the celebration will be the return of audience favorite Square Dance, including live square dance caller and chamber ensemble.
